Low clouds

Another situation where a landscape looked great with the eye, but I just couldn't seem to capture it.  The result is pretty boring, but it's what I have tonight.  We had some big storms this afternoon and when we headed out for dinner these low clouds were hanging in the valleys.

Heaven

Sitting by a lamp on the daybed of our mountain porch with a good book and cup of tea....a steady rain, frogs chirping and the thunder rolling around me.  A heavenly Friday night.

A young Faye and Stewart

I was unpacking some of the stuff we brought home from cleaning out George's mom's apartment and found these two old photos that George wanted to keep.  This is his mother and father - Faye and Stewart - when they were young.  His mother is now 89 and his father died when he was 65.  To me, George doesn't really look very much like either of his parents (maybe a little like his dad).....he looks more like his grandfather (George Elvester(!)) West) when he was young.  I'll try to find a photo of him to post sometime.

Wedding hat

One of the coolest things we found among George's mom's stuff.  She was very good about saving everything, so occasionally we stumbled across something fun.

More bad food

I'm exhausted, have a cold and am now about 5 lbs. heavier, thanks to all the "bad for me" food I've eaten since we came to G'ville.  I'm going to have to go on a fast if we ever make it back to Charlotte!

The task at hand

Still in the process of clearing out George's mom's apartment.  We're still knee deep in stuff, hopefully with an end in sight.

Grandmother's house

Today we took George's mom out for Mother's Day brunch and decided afterwards to drive over to Dover, NC to see George's grandmother's old house.  The house was built before the Civil War and has a great deal of history.  George spent every summer with his grandparents and has many good memories of his time there.  Unfortunately, the house now belongs to a cousin of his who lives in Jacksonville, NC and so no one is living there and, being abandoned, is quickly going to ruin.  I realized that George didn't have a single photo of his grandparent's homeplace, so I wanted to go there and take a few images before it started falling down.  When his aunt moved in several years ago, she added a ramp and resided the house with aluminum siding, so it's changed the character of the old place a bit, but it's still his grandparent's house and the place of many wonderful childhood summers.
